I created the cover art for the UK edition of Haruki Murakami’s After Dark.The theme centers on the aspects of Tokyo that emerge only at night. I sought to portray the city’s unique atmosphere, including the currents of air, the flicker of light and shadow, and the intersection of people’s gazes and thoughts, in a simple, understated form while avoiding excessive ornamentation. Through the rhythm of the composition and the use of negative space, the artwork conveys a spatial sense in which both stillness and quiet bustle coexist. Each element symbolizes the characters’ inner anxieties and anticipations, as well as the subtle emotional currents that pass between them as they move past one another.
