For the 135th anniversary project of Bankaku Sohonpo, I created the package artwork inspired by the “Hatsune Maki-e Small Square Red-handled Cosmetic Box,” a National Treasure from the Tokugawa Art Museum. The project involved extensive research, including interviews with museum curators and detailed study of historical materials. By carefully interpreting the narratives depicted on the box and the refined craftsmanship of its master artisans, the artwork incorporates these elements into a contemporary design. Multiple layers were built up to express the depth and overlapping forms characteristic of the original piece. The world of The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu and cherished for over a thousand years, has long influenced Japanese art and craftsmanship. This project carries forward that elegant aesthetic, inviting viewers to experience a rich intersection of history, artistry, and Japanese hospitality alongside a confectionery brand with 135 years of heritage. Received the Nagoya Mayor’s Award at the FY2025 Recommended Products Review by the Nagoya Tourism Brand Association.
