Light up your day

Japanese candle project

Creative direction , Art direction , Design , Artwork

Using the richly coloured candles kindly provided by Daiyo, a traditional Japanese candle maker established in 1914, I created a seven-piece set representing the days of the week. The series, themed "colourful everyday life", reimagines the warmth and nuance found in each candle’s hue.The idea came from layering Japanese candles into a European lifestyle, where candles are part of daily life. Daiyo’s clean-burning, gently flickering flame blends naturally into that setting. The seven candles are grouped into three for clothing, food, and shelter, and four for the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. Lit at dusk, they invite a brief moment of reflection at the end of the day.

This work was produced for a UK solo exhibition themed around a tea party and introduced the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship to a European audience.
